Desktop Editor/Graphic Designer Position

Background information:

The Roma Education Fund is an international organization that aims to close the gap in educational outcomes between Roma and non-Roma through policies and programs that support quality education for Roma and through the desegregation of educational systems in formal Decade for Roma Inclusion member countries.

REF publishes several types of publications in various languages (predominantly English and Eastern European languages) such as its annual report, research papers, country assessment reports and promotional materials. (http://www.romaeducationfund.hu/publications/studies-and-researches)

The REF requires a central graphic theme for its publications in 2011 and beyond.

Required skills:

  • Knowledge of Adobe programs (Photoshop, Acrobat, Indesign)
  • Experience working with printing houses
  • In-depth knowledge of the full preparation work required for publications based on technical needs
  • Strong knowledge of both English and Hungarian
  • Experience building a central graphic theme for a company’s brand
  • Possessing all necessary technical software, programs

Interested applicants should submit:

  • Cover letter
  • Portfolio of previous design work and print publications
  • List of references
  • Sample A5 size information booklet on Roma education (cover page and one internal page with photo and text flow) using the central graphic theme
  • Sample one-page REF Newsletter using the central graphic theme
  • Draft poster introducing REF that uses the central graphic theme
  • Cost proposal for the design and layout of a 50-page A5 format publication (color cover, one color inner page) with the central graphic theme
  • Additionally, please submit a general quotation as follows:
    • Layout/desktop editing  – HUF/page
    • Graphics – HUF/piece
    • Covers design – HUF/cover
    • Posters design – HUF/poster
    • Mutations – HUF/mutation

General considerations:

REF publications must use the existing REF logo that represents the organization and refers to the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015, the political framework for REF’s activities in the next five years. The new graphic theme of publication should:

  • Have a modern , unique and engaging look (Previous REF publications are available on our website: www.romaeducationfund.org)
  • Be applicable to a series of publications (For example: Annual reports; research papers; country reports; quarterly newsletters; and promotional materials, such as leaflets, posters and stationary)
  • Compliment the existing REF logo below
  • Maintain identical design and graphic elements (for instance: type font; colors; text; position of logo; position of illustration) in all submitted sample piece

Detailed description of the different pieces to be presented:

1. One sample A5 size information booklet on Roma education using the central graphic theme

  • A5 format
  • Color cover page with photo
  • One internal page with photo and text flow
  • Black and white internal page with one additional color

2. Sample one-page REF Newsletter using the central graphic theme

  • A4 format
  • Should contain a title, logo, pictures, short news pieces and information in text boxes
  • Full color

3. Poster introducing REF that uses the central graphic theme

  • 1m width and 2m length-rolling poster
  • Photo background with limited text (approx. 100 words) and logo arranged on the poster

Selected applicants will be asked to elaborate on proposed graphic and design elements that may be used in the layout and design of all forthcoming REF publications in greater detail.
