The Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice (Poland) organizes the third edition of the competition dedicated to books designed for children.

The competition is addressed to students and graduates (years 2010-2011) of arts and design schools of University level in Poland and abroad.

The aim of the competition is to present illustration which shows the artist’s understanding of the needs of the young reader and to demonstrate a grasp of the fundamental elements of book design in the publishing market. The aim of the competition is also to promote young artists to the publishing market. The international character of the competition will allow the organizers and participants to compare the level and the methods of teaching in this field in European schools.

Category 1 – publisher’s texts
The subject of the Category 1 are works made for the texts provided by the publishers. The works should be made according to the conditions specified by the publishers. Original texts provided by the publishers are protected by the copyright, and can be used only for the competition. The submission of an entry into this category signifies its Author’s unequivocal acceptance of the terms and conditions of these Regulations. Publisher’s texts and technical requirements are only available in Polish. Entries in Category 1 will be judged and awarded by the publishers. The publishers reserve the right to not to confer prizes. Competition organizers will not mediate in the further cooperation between publishers and award winners. The results will be announced on the day of the opening of the exhibition.

Category 2 – general category
The subject of the Category 2 are illustrations or book designs for children. Minimum 4 illustrations must be submitted for the one text for children. Participants can submit illustrations, spreads with texts or book dummies. In case of submitting book dummies, 4 printouts of page spreads should also be enclosed. The age of the reader should be specified: 0–3, 4–8, 9–12. The author and the title of the text should be given if it’s not widely known and participant doesn’t put it on the design. In case of submitting books based on texts by other authors, the Jury will only evaluate the illustrations and book design. In case of original books, the Jury may also take the text into account. Works published before are excluded from the competition. The prizes in the Category 2 will be awarded by a Jury consisted of children’s book specialists.
