The Hungary Initiatives Foundation invites applications for “Art and Culture” Grants

Interested organizations can apply for grants up to $20,000 until December 15, 2013 for art and culture projects that are in line with and advance the fundamental mission of HIF.

The Hungary Initiatives Foundation is committed to foster understanding of the Hungarian culture in the United States, as well as strengthen the cultural ties between the two nations. For this reason, we invite interested organizations to apply for “Art and Culture” grants. The proposed programs must be aimed at introducing and popularizing traditional and contemporary Hungarian art and culture among the Hungarian American communities and the wider American audience. The details of the application process are below. Before applying, please read our general funding guidelines under the About Us section that apply to every grant the Foundation makes.

Available grant

Applicants can request funding up to $20,000 per project. As a principle, The Hungary Initiatives Foundation does not provide full funding for projects. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the project through a meaningful contribution of their own human and/or financial resources, but at least in the worth of 10% of the overall project budget.

Project

HIF will consider a broad range of projects under the category of “Art and Culture”. However, projects must be in line with HIF’s mission of strengthening the cultural ties between the two countries, promoting traditional and contemporary Hungarian culture in the US, or contributing to the preservation of the Hungarian cultural heritage in the United States.

The project must be realized until December 31, 2014.

Eligibility

US-based 501(c)(3) organizations (US-based charitable or educational institutions), Hungary-based educational institutions, or Hungary-based 501(c)(3)-equivalent organizations can all apply for this grant.

Prospective grantee partners must have systems and processes for ensuring responsible management of funds. At a minimum, an organization must have basic accounting and reporting systems as well as phone and email access.

How to apply

For all applicants (Americans and Hungarians organizations): In order to apply, please fill out the Application form in English that can be downloaded from our website (at the bottom of this page) and send it back via email with the subject “Art and Culture” to hif@hungaryfoundation.org.

The form consists of the following parts:

I. Basic organization information

II. Tax status: (including EIN in case of US-based organizations)

III. Request

   a.    Name or topic of the proposed project or work to be done

   b.    Amount of funding requested from the Foundation and total cost

   c.    Time period for which funding is requested

   d.    A brief statement of the purpose and nature of the proposed project

IV. Executive Summary

   a.    The significance of the issue addressed by the project and how it relates to The Hungary Initiatives Foundation’s mission and program focus areas

   b.    How the project will address the issue

   c.    Objectives and expectations of the project

   d.    Detailed work phases

   e.    How the issue relates to your organization, and why your organization is qualified to undertake the project

   f.    Information about those who will be targeted and helped by the project

V. Budget

Include the total amount of funds requested from the Foundation and a line-item expense and revenue budget showing all projected sources of funds for the program/project over the proposed grant period.

Additional requirements for US-based 501(c)(3) organizations

Applicants must provide proof of their tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status by the IRS.

Additional requirements for Hungary-based educational institutions and Hungary-based 501(c)(3)-equivalent organizations

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) ruling known as Revenue Procedure 92-94 offers a simplified affidavit procedure that allows private foundation grants to be made to organizations outside the United States. The Foundation follows this procedure in order to determine whether a foreign grantee is the equivalent to a United States 501(c)(3) public charity, educational or private foundation under U.S. tax law. The procedure involves the review and reliance on an affidavit provided by the Hungary-based organization requesting the grant.

Please fill out and submit “Appendix B_AFFIDAVIT FOR NON-US ORGS_1-1” that can be downloaded from our website (at the bottom of this page).

If a project is accepted by The Hungary Initiatives Foundation, the prospective Hungarian grantee then will be asked to provide additional proof that it is organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational or other exempt purposes — that is, the equivalent of a 501(c)(3) exempt organization in the United States. Please note that the following steps will only have to be made if the project is accepted, HIF will contact prospective grantees and will provide the necessary instructions and the list of required documents in due time!

 – Organization will be required to provide English language copies of its charter, articles of incorporation, bylaws and other governing documents, and substantial proof that:

It is operated exclusively for specified charitable/educational purposes.

Its country’s laws and customs, or its governing documents, do not permit substantial non-charitable activities or lobbying.

Either its country’s laws and customs, or the organization’s governing documents, prohibit any direct or indirect intervention in a political campaign.

Its country’s laws and customs, or the organization’s governing documents, do not permit any of its assets or income to benefit a private person.

 – Prospective grantees will also have to complete a public support schedule and major donor support schedule, to detail the sources of its support over the last four years (or period that the organization has been in existence, if less than five years). The Foundation will then make a „reasonable judgment” and „good faith determination” of the grantee’s 501(c)(3)-equivalent status.

Selection guidelines

Grantees will be selected based on the project details, the expected level of outreach and impact, and the project’s contribution to HIF’s cultural mission.

Deadline

Applicants must submit their proposals and budget until December 15, 2013.

Prospective grant awardees will be notified and asked to submit additional proof of their nonprofit status by January 15, 2014.
