Internships at the European Central Bank

The European Central Bank offers internship opportunities to students of economics, finance statistics, business administration, law, human resources, translation, etc. Applicants should be enrolled in post-graduate or graduate studies. Very occasionally, such opportunities are also offered to undergraduate students.
These assignments give students an opportunity to put their learning into practice, to gain an insight into the ECB’s activities and operations but also to contribute, directly or indirectly, to the ECB’s mission.

Internships are offered for periods of three to twelve months. The work range from research and the preparation of draft reports to the compilation of statistical data and participation in ad hoc studies, etc.

Various internship opportunities may become available throughout the year ECB-wide. In addition, there are two regular programmes: The ECB Graduate Research Programme (GRP) offered by the Directorate General Research (DG-R) and the ECB Statistics Internship Programme offered by the Directorate General Statistics (DG-S).

The Graduate Research Programme:
This programme is aimed at high-potential economists enrolled in post-graduate courses who have successfully completed their course of study and are writing their PhD thesis. The selected applicants conduct research in DG-R on issues of relevance to the ECB. They are required to complete a research paper, of a theoretical or empirical nature, suitable for presentation at an internal seminar and for publication within the scope of the ECB Working Paper series.

The ECB Statistics Internship Programme:
This programme is open to recent graduates or students who are close to finishing their graduate studies in the fields of economics, statistics, finance, business administration or related disciplines. The selected applicants gain exposure to conceptual and operational statistical work in a policy-oriented environment that supports the definition and conduct of the monetary policy of the ECB.
They are also responsible for one or several tasks including information management, quality control of data transmitted to the ECB as well as statistical analytical tasks relating to time-series analysis and the assessment of banking industry and financial market developments. Interns are expected to complete a self-contained conceptual or empirical study or to develop an operational application suitable for presentation at seminars.

Interns receive a monthly internship allowance. In addition, the ECB reimburses the travel expenses incurred on commencement and termination of the assignment and provides temporary accommodation (single-occupancy apartment) for the duration of the assignment to the interns habitually residing outside the Rhein-Main region.
Interns are granted access to the ECB library, computing facilities, staff restaurant, etc. and take part in a one-day induction session course organised by the Recruitment and Staff Development Division.

Eligible candidates:

  • are nationals of an EU Member State
  • have a good knowledge of both spoken and written English and a satisfactory knowledge of one other official EU language
